Daniel S. McDevitt, M.S.
Daniel S. Mc Devitt, a thirty-one year law enforcement veteran,
is Chief of Police of a mid-sized department located in the suburbs
of Chicago.
Chief Mc Devitt has a B.S. Degree in Criminology & Psychology,
an M.S. Degree in Criminology, is a graduate of the FBI National
Academy and the FBI Executive Development Program, and has taught
at colleges, universities, police academies, and for agencies in
the United States, Europe, and the Middle East for both civilian
and military law enforcement personnel. He currently develops law
enforcement and management courses and is an Instructor throughout
the United States for Northwestern University, the University of
North Florida (IPTM), the University of Arkansas, and other training
programs.
He has authored a book Managing the Investigative Unit (Charles
C. Thomas, Publishers, Springfield, IL) and several law enforcement
and management articles. He serves as a consultant for both the
public and private sectors on policy development, physical security
analysis, personnel and promotional selection, leadership and management
training, and assessment center development and implementation.
Prior to becoming a chief of police, he retired as a Captain after
24 years with the Illinois State Police, and his command assignments
included: Violent Crimes, Drug Enforcement, Auto Theft, Financial
Crimes, Patrol, Tactical Response Team, and several other units.
He participated in and supervised numerous high profile major cases,
including Multiple Murders, Mass Sexual Molestations of Children,
Undercover "Sting" Projects, Officer-involved Shootings,
and others. He commanded numerous Multi-agency Task Forces tasked
with investigating a variety of major criminal offenses.
He is also retired as an Intelligence Officer with the U.S. Navy,
where he held the rank of Lieutenant Commander after completing
a twenty-year career. During his enlisted service, he served as
a Medical Corpsman, working in medical evacuation hospitals and
units caring for Vietnam wounded Naval and Marine Corps personnel.
In 1985, he received a commission as an Intelligence Officer, and
specialized in foreign counterintelligence, protective services,
and counter terrorism. He was recalled to active duty in 1991 and
again in 1993 for Operation Desert Storm, and served in Europe
and the Middle East on a Counter-terrorist team, conducting counter
surveillance and protective services operations.
Mc Devitt has served as a consultant for the U.S. Department of State
on several occasions, planning and conducting protective service
details for such dignitaries as the Dalai Lama, the Vice Premier
of the People’s Republic of China, and others. He has also
traveled to Europe on behalf of the State Department, consulting
with host country police personnel on issues such as: Training, Investigation
of Officer-Involved Shootings, and Terrorism.
