Gangs/Drugs in the Workplace
The presence of gangs and drugs within the workplace
is both an invisible and destructive force to a company. It is invisible
because by their nature, most gang members and drug dealers (who are
often one of the same) usually seek to prevent disclosure. Simply stated,
in order to survive within the workplace, the gang member and the drug
dealer must go "under the radar screen". They need to operate
rather silently in order to maintain their job, and to supplement their
income through the sale of illegal narcotics, and the commission of
other crimes, such as thefts, robberies, and the like. In this sense,
most companies do not know they have a problem, until it surfaces in
a dramatic and destructive way, such as a workplace shooting or a drug
overdose.
Our consultants have both the expertise and skills
to help your company learn various identifiers of gang and drug activities.
These identifiers typically are disguised as simple, everyday items,
such as clothing colors, styles, attires, and logos. Further, language,
hand signs, graffiti, and behaviors also may be identifiers of gang
and drug activities. In order to fully appreciate the significance
of these often subtle identifiers, we employ active police officers
as consultants. Since the gang and drug culture is constantly evolving,
partly due to societal trends and conditions, the need to have "current"
intelligence is crucial to be able to properly and accurately identify
such activity.
Once identified, we assist you to frame corporate
policies and procedures, designed to foster a secure environment, while
at the same time, being cognizant of competing principles, such as
privacy and discrimination laws. This is a delicate balance for the
individual untrained in the nuances of gang/drug activity, and not
adequately trained and versed in legal frameworks, such as case law
and legislation. Our consultants are sensitive to this balance. For
example, Dr. James F. Pastor, is an attorney with substantial experience
in public safety and employment law. He was also a former tactical
police officer in the Gang Crime Enforcement Unit with the Chicago
Police Department. His experiences in the gang unit coupled with his
legal training and experience will provide concise and cogent advice
on how best to resolve gang and drug activity within your company.
The failure to deal with such activity can result in substantial damages
and exposure.
